What Is Stainless Steel Wire Rope?

Stainless Steel Wire rope is a lifting and rigging cable made of twisted stainless steel wires, offering high tensile strength combined with superior corrosion resistance. The two dominant grades are AISI 304 for general outdoor use and AISI 316 for marine, pool and chemical environments, where molybdenum content resists chloride pitting. Unlike galvanized carbon Steel Rope, Stainless Rope needs no lubrication coating to fight rust, which keeps it clean for architectural, food and medical applications.

Key Specifications

  • Constructions: 1×7, 1×19, 7×7, 7×19 — the lay pattern sets flexibility vs. strength
  • Grades: AISI 304 / 304L, AISI 316 / 316L; duplex 2205 for high-load offshore
  • Diameter range: 0.5 mm micro rope up to 40 mm rigging size
  • Core types: independent Wire Rope core (IWRC) for strength, fiber core (FC) for grip and flexibility
  • Finishes: unlubricated (non-marking) or lubricated for reduced internal friction
  • Certification: tested to EN 12385, ASTM A1023 / A492 with mill certificates per lot

Stainless vs. Galvanized Wire Rope

Attribute Stainless 304/316 Galvanized carbon steel
Corrosion resistance Excellent, no red rust Fair, zinc layer depletes
Strength High Slightly higher per diameter
Cost Higher initial Lower initial
Lifespan outdoors/marine 10+ years Replaced every few years
Best for Marine, architecture, food plants Critical lifts, budget projects

Typical Applications

  • Marine & offshore: mast stays, winch lines, dock mooring, yacht rigging (316 grade)
  • Architecture & design: balustrade cables, bridge railings, kinetic sculptures, greenhouse structures
  • Industrial lifting: slings, hoist ropes, crane lines in humid or washdown areas
  • Consumer & utility: clothesline, fence and trellis wire, aircraft control cables, elevator governor ropes

Why Buyers Choose Our Stainless Wire Rope

Each lot ships with a breaking-force test report traceable to its production batch, consistent lay tension for clean swaging and crimping, and true-to-spec alloy content verified by spectrometer — so inspectors sign off on the first pass.

FAQ

Which grade should I choose, 304 or 316? Use 304 for inland and general outdoor duty. Choose 316 within 10 km of coastlines, in pools, or anywhere exposed to de-icing salt or chemicals.
Is Stainless Wire rope magnetic? 304/316 are mildly magnetic after cold drawing and bending — magnetism does not indicate a fake grade; verify by test report.
What diameter lasts longest outdoors? Larger diameter lowers working stress per strand. For rigging spans, 6 mm 7×19 in 316 is a common all-round choice; request the load table for your breaking load.
